Position Overview


The Business Development Manager – Defense is responsible for identifying, developing, and executing international business growth opportunities for Meopta within the global defense market. This role combines strategic market development, technical‑commercial leadership, and deep customer engagement across complex, long‑cycle defense programs.

The position plays a key role in expanding Meopta’s footprint with defense primes, specialized system integrators, and government customers, while acting as a trusted interface between customers and Meopta’s engineering, manufacturing, and leadership teams.


Key Responsibilities

  • Business Development & Market Expansion
  • Identify, develop, and manage new business opportunities across existing and emerging defense markets.
  • Build and sustain long‑term relationships with key customer stakeholders.
  • Develop and maintain a short‑ and long‑term commercial opportunity pipeline across assigned markets and accounts.
  • Identify new defense applications and platforms where Meopta’s optical and optoelectronic solutions can be successfully positioned.
  • Collaborate with management and external partners to define and execute market entry and penetration strategies.
  • New Product Development & Technical Liaison
  • Drive new product and solution development in close cooperation with customers and internal teams by:Identifying and defining customer, platform, and program requirements
  • Acting as a technical‑commercial consultant and interface between customers and Meopta
  • Translating customer needs into clear inputs for engineering, manufacturing, and industrialization
  • Aligning customer requirements with best‑fit Meopta solutions, including customization where required
  • Commercial & Contractual Activities
  • Actively participate in commercial and contractual negotiations, including pricing, scope definition, and delivery terms.
  • Support proposal development, bid preparation, and customer presentations.
  • Proactively create demand for Meopta solutions through technical workshops, proposals, customer education, and on‑site engagement.
  • Market Intelligence & Brand Building
  • Maintain a strong understanding of defense market dynamics, technology trends, competitive landscape, and customer needs.
  • Strengthen Meopta’s market presence and reputation through:Trade fairs, exhibitions, and industry events
  • Strategic partnerships and alliances
  • Active participation in defense industry organizations and forums
  • Internal Collaboration
  • Drive strong collaboration between business development, sales, engineering, and manufacturing.
  • Ensure alignment between customer expectations and Meopta’s technical, production, and delivery capabilities.
  • Promote a culture of customer focus, accountability, and sustainable growth.


Key Deliverables

  • Generation and conversion of qualified defense business opportunities into long‑term programs and contracts.
  • Development of a robust, realistic commercial pipeline across global defense markets.
  • Successful positioning of Meopta solutions within customer platforms and defense programs.
  • Effective internal alignment supporting competitive proposals and reliable execution.
  • Strengthening Meopta’s reputation as a trusted optical partner in the defense industry.


Experience

  • Several years of experience in business development, technical sales, or key account roles within the defense industry.
  • Proven track record working with:Tier‑1 defense OEMs and system integrators
  • Specialized defense companies (e.g. missile systems, sensors, fire control, ISR)
  • Experience with complex B2B technical sales and long‑cycle, program‑driven projects.
  • Understanding of defense customer structures and decision‑making processes, including government and MoD environments.


Skills

  • Strong technical understanding of optical, optoelectronic, or sensor‑based systems.
  • Ability to navigate complex technical and organizational environments.
  • Excellent communication, presentation, and negotiation skills.
  • High level of commercial and financial acumen.
  • Strategic mindset combined with hands‑on execution capability.
  • Ability to build trust and long‑term relationships across cultures and seniority levels.
  • Fluent English (written and spoken); additional languages are an advantage.


Additional Requirements

  • Higher education in optics, engineering, physics, or a related technical field (Master’s degree preferred).
  • Willingness and ability to travel extensively (typically >50%) to customer sites, trade shows, and international meetings.
  • Due to the nature of the role and customers, candidates must be eligible to obtain and maintain the required security clearance.
